We Required All Schools to Offer CS, This is What Happened Next
Indiana, Maryland, and West Virginia are 3 of the 20 states that require all high schools to offer computer science. While not a graduation requirement, the intent of this policy is to increase the opportunity for all students to learn computer science. Each state has approached the policy differently – extending the requirement to other grade levels, providing different levels of funding, and even creating special centers to solely focus on the issue. Yet all approach computer science through an equity lens. Come learn about how they came to adopt the policy, how the implementation of the policy is going, and what the effect has been on schools, teachers, and students. Whether you are thinking about advocating for this policy or are already implementing it, there will be a lot of lessons learned from these three states.
