Teri Kriege: I have the State of CS Education Report that I'm happy to share with you and KCSA as well!

41:26
what are key challenges schools in your states are facing in growing their CS classes?

41:46
Emily Meyer: Thank you!!

42:08
I appreciate hearing an administrator say "I needed to understand that difference between remote learning and computer science" ! THANK YOU for not assuming they are mutually exclusive!

42:17
We do an annual survey in our region and are hearing lack of qualified teachers and lack of student interest as the top two challenges faced by districts

42:24
Kim - I just sent your question to the Q&A!

43:03
@David - check out STE(A)M resource Hub at —> https://bestforall.tnedu.gov/binder/featured-family-resources

43:26
Hi from Houston, TX, ISTE CSN, NCWIT, AAUW, CS4TX. CS Education Activist since 1990’s and Code.org “grandmother”.

43:39
Agreed, Alicia. Thanks for putting that out there.

45:37
I agree Alicia!

46:37
Now that virtual learning has become the new reality is there a movement to make information technology courses mandatory for all students? It has been my experience that sometimes students are unable to perform the simple task of keyboarding.

46:43
Need help setting a vision? Check out CSforALL’s vision quiz! visionsquiz.csforall.org

47:39
Thanks for passing along, Leigh Ann. Will take this back to Illinois stakeholders.

47:41
Always good to see Karen North on a call :-)

47:43
Kim, sounds about right...teachers and interest. The state and higher ed could coordinate a little more to support CS in K-12 too.

48:19
Cindi - can you answer this question and I will post answer - Are there any examples in NV of secondary CS programs that are utilized as dual enrollment for skilled technical workforce? Can students get certifications by graduation?

48:25
Thanks Steve! We tried to take our visions activity from SCRIPT and translate it onto a useful online tool

49:06
Yep Ryan - Karen makes great connections and has a ton of CS knowledge!

49:11
Is Ted E. here too?

49:24
The focus on policy —> students is so important! Thanks for highlighting that!

50:11
I love seeing the CSforAll SCRIPT discussions. th

50:25
Yes, TedE is here and has a new button for https://www.reinventedmagazine.com/

50:46
Districts that have implemented SCRIPT in KY are making huge strides.

51:02
GREAT question

51:29
Nice touch, Alexis!

51:54
I think that “butts in seats” is a great way to start but are there conversations about different measurements to examine how we assess deeper engagement in CS?

52:20
can anyone give me links to secondary CS programs that are part of a dual enrollment program? Specifically looking for programs that have certification/apprenticeship options for skilled technical work

53:22
The SCRIPT workshop held here in Milwaukee WI area have already begun to make a big difference in attitudes toward planning and future direction despite the CYA thinking going on within this pandemic.

53:43
Another area of equity has been in groups of students with disabilities. AP CS Principles has really opened the equity door with these kids.

54:17
Engagement for CS must begin K-5!

54:19
Mississippi has a DE/DC program in software development: https://cs4ms.wpengine.com/k12courses/sdp/ would be happy to share more: shelly.hollis@rcu.msstate.edu

54:27
@kathleen - are you talking about college in the HS? (We have https://www.uwhs.uw.edu/) but a lot of students in WA state also do “Running Start)

54:41
Exactly Penny! We don't want to "wait too long" Provide access starting in k-8 so all students know they can do it.

54:48
Hi Kathleen, URI has a Concurrent enrollment program http://k12.cs.uri.edu/

55:02
From Heidi Williams to Panelists and Attendees: (12:48 PM)The SCRIPT workshop held here in Milwaukee WI area have already begun to make a big difference in attitudes toward planning and future direction despite the CYA thinking going on within this pandemic.

55:21
Teacher capacity is SO important

55:30
Since 2018, SB 200 was adopted a year later mandating 100% of Nevada high schools will offer Computer Science programs by the year 2022. We’ve made great strides since then going from 60% or our schools to 80% this year. At this pace we will meet that mandate ahead of schedule!

55:42
Yes, college dual enrollment, but for non-four-year degree programs.

55:46
Check out the CAPE framework developed by Dr. Fletcher and Dr. Warner from UT Austin: https://utexas.app.box.com/file/664555213314?s=t0d8mugfd8qvaxwk0uoeaqlxf65bdlrb

55:46
@Kathleen - KY has implemented dual credit Digital Literacy in partnership with our community college system with an emphasis on 3D printing and manufacturing where students can continue with an industry certificate.

55:49
Maine has dual enrollment in Early College for ME and Rural U https://ruralu.umfk.edu/

56:23
So glad to hear that SCRIPT has already started to move your CS Ed strategy forward, Heidi! If anyone wants more information about SCRIPT: https://www.csforall.org/projects_and_programs/script/

56:25
Per what Supt Balow just said - Lots of this additional data is in the 2020 State of CS report!

56:46
Over the last 3 years, 3500+ middle school female students were exposed to career exploration and hands-on activities in various STEM and Information Technology fields.

57:04
As people are considering how to use data to identify and develop CS ed strategies, check out the state landscape reports that ECEP states have published. https://ecepalliance.org/resources/landscape-reports

57:10
There are lots of examples specifically focused on closing the gender gap. I would love to hear specific examples focused on closing the racial and ethnic gap beyond access. There is data that shows that even when there is access, White and Asian students are enrolled at much higher levels than Black and Latino students.

57:23
Unfortunately, most CS Curricula is not designed to be accessible to students with disabilities, especially blind students. Are states addressing this?

57:36

58:13
We must be careful about conflating conversations about race and ethnicity with conversations about CS4ALL.

59:11
I love that competitiveness @Penny

59:22
great points @tamara Pearson!

59:27
Very good point Tamara. Access is just one piece of the puzzle, and we can’t stop at that.

59:40
Tamara, why?

59:41
@Tamara: I am in full agreement with you.

01:00:08
@Tamara I would love to read over that data if you have any resource links handy.

01:00:41
How do you close gaps, other than increasing access? States are prioritizing grant applications that focus on underrepresented groups of students and requiring enrollment data, among other things.

01:00:51
@Penny and @Jilian - Is your team’s strategic plan available?

01:00:53
Tamara - great points. Code.org has a few resources to recruit students who are traditionally underrepresented in CS to courses. https://code.org/educate/resources/recruit

Nevada CS Strategic Plan - https://drive.google.com/file/d/10LXbVjvD8ZooHrL1znJVekwmQqAQgCll/view?usp=sharing

01:01:17
@Tamera - in Wisconsin we have a grass roots group called WIT Wisconsin . They provide mentors for college age girls, and hands on mentoring /coding sessions for girls in middle school and high school

01:01:35
The 2020 State of CS Education goes beyond Access - and features participation and disparity data

01:01:57
@Samantha is the next step a requirement for all students? Would that come after the teaching core is sufficiently built or before?

01:02:02
@Patricia: Because just like there are unique challenges related to closing the gender gap, there are unique challenges related to race and ethnicity. Access for all is not enough and is often shown to only maintain the gap because enrollment in all groups grows.

01:02:07
See NCWIT material about including women and students of color. There is much more than access to consider.

01:02:39
Code.org also works with our amazing Regional Partners to make sure teachers who are preparing to teach computer science know how critical it is to recruit students to their courses and create welcoming and open classrooms

01:03:02
Absolutely. It is not inconceivable that a diverse school offers computer science classes that do not reflect the school’s demographics.

01:03:26
@Bryan, I think that a requirement for all students, at least K–8 may be helpful, but students also need to feel welcome in CS and see themselves represented and supported in that content.

01:03:28
@Tamara, @Pat: Efforts such as those occurring in Chicago Public Schools go beyond access and achieve participation of all.

01:03:35
Microsoft TEALS is also in over 35+ states and has resources available regarding increasing participation among females and minority students.

01:03:45
Let’s go Chicago! Proud of you all

01:03:54
@Tamara I see what you are saying. I misunderstood. I am with you on that 100%

01:03:56
Wow. Just skimmed through the dataset released alongside the Report. This is outstanding.

01:04:16
@Bryan, I think that subjects like math have similar problems. All students are required to take it, but not all feel supported or represented in the work and learning they are doing.

01:04:18
@Steven it is awesome isn't it!

01:04:54
@Luis - The work of Jane Margolis and her team addresses this.

@Tamara thank you I will take a look.

01:05:25
@Ronald, do you have a link to the Chicago results?

01:05:52
@Luis - numerous data points appropriate to share with multiple state-level stakeholders.. especially when needed for an “elevator speech".

01:05:59
@Tamara: I should have said also "equal outcomes for all". See the SIGCSE paper with those words in the titel.

01:06:24
Thank you for a greta conversation! Unfortunately I have to run to another meeting.

01:06:33
@Ronald I’m attending the policy specifically for Illinois tomorrow

01:06:50
@Steven it definitely does !

01:06:56
I am working to develop a district Physical Computing Training System to engage teachers and students with see, feel, hear, and touch aspects which I feel will move CS forward.

01:07:09
In December 2019, the KC STEM Alliance released a CS Ed Report for Kansas City and shared that 90% of the public high schools in KC offer a CS course and many have a full pathway, with a significant implementation of Project Lead The Way along with Code.org and AP CS courses.

Erika Klose is awesome for West Virginia.

01:13:15
My first Ed Policy battle was with the Texas SBOE to keep CS Certification when TEA was going to remove it in 1990s. Started me on my advocacy road.

01:13:21
I would think time would be a big issue at the classroom level. Adding standards without removing other standards--when do you teach it? If CS is embedded with existing standards it will help.

01:13:21
we thank all of your CS specialists for your work! You are so important!

01:13:47

KANSAS! Time to step up our game!

01:14:12
Connecticut has this as a local decision

01:14:16
To the many questions in the chat about equity and inclusion, CSforALL is currently working on a set of tools for district administrators (co-designed with many from our district equity cohort!) focused on centering justice in decision-making and policy planning for district-wide CS initiatives. Will be able to share in the coming months!

01:14:45
Grateful, all. Have to head back to class!

Hey Jake!

01:15:09
So much to celebrate. However, so much work left to do. I am so glad everyone is here to work together to improve CS opportunities for ALL students.

01:15:12
@Kathleen - Each of Nevada's CS standards have crosswalks to our other core subject standards to support cross-subject integration, especially at the elementary level

@Kathleen - Here is our standards document with the connections on each standard page: http://www.doe.nv.gov/uploadedFiles/nde.doe.nv.gov/content/Nevada_Academic_Standards/Comp_Tech_Standards/NevadaAcademicContentStandards_forrev.pdf

01:17:43
that’s an incredible point @Jake. I can’t believe that 6% number.

01:17:46
@cindi--that is great! Helps teachers understand how to add CS without losing something else. Thank you for the link to the NV CS standards.

01:17:56
Thank you for sharing this, Cindi!

01:18:17
399!

01:18:23
@cindi Thank You!!

01:18:40
@Kathleen - exactly! Work smarter, not harder. We need to do a better job at connecting ALL of our subject areas for our students.

01:18:45
400! Thank you All! @lulac was the last to get to my goal.

01:19:13
yay Carol! another CS education rockstar!

01:19:21
Check out some amazing resources at www.ecepalliance.org

01:19:28
Forgive me if I missed this, will the slides be available for later reference?

01:20:00
Carol, Maine has been working with the ECEP New England cohort!

01:20:03
And follow ECEP on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ECEP_CS

01:20:27
I believe we need to get parents to understand the value of students learning CS; it is hard to get a parent to recommend that their child take a CS course if they don't understand CS themselves; hence, we need to develop community outreach for parents so they will learn about CS and related careers so parents can then encourage their children to enroll in CS classes.

01:20:39
Re @Kathleen's question: Pedagogically, is it best practice to integrate CS standards into existing standards? Or do they need to be own standards - as in CS is just as important as Math, ELA, etc? Personally, I feel like integration ensures higher adoption...but, where we are now, is it the best way to teach rigorous cs?

01:20:43
This is great!!

01:21:27
“Access alone will not lead to equity” - great quote

01:22:35
as a Black Woman how can we move past these numbers that keep us at low percentages every year in CS?

01:22:39
@kathleen @Alicia its hard to imagine a one-sized-fits-all approach to basic CS learning. Should they learn CS first and then other content areas can use those skills? Or do the concepts get taught together? Its going to depend on teachers, school culture, grade levels, etc.

01:23:12
@Kathleen @Alicia we are seeing great curriculum and research for both approaches

01:23:27
@carol I agree with your statement that accessibility does not bring about equity; we have diverse demographics in our district and reflect that data you have shown in your slide deck; we need to bring equity into education, but we need to identify the factors that deter students from enrolling in these courses; I believe this relates to my previous message, we need to include parents in the learning process by exposing them to CS and the careers and opportunities that come from knowing CS.

01:23:39
We call on ALL states to collect participation data like Carol talked about. We need more than 11 states reporting that data.

01:23:56
This speaks to the importance of highly-qualified teachers. Too often teachers without appropriate content knowledge equate computer science with digital literacy.

01:24:12
@Leigh Ann - I agree. I worry about a one size fits all model as well and fear that the integration model is being toted as just that, especially in locations where administrators are unfamiliar with cs.

01:24:27
@Pat Maine is working with the ECEP New England cohort. The report will be ready later this month.

01:24:41
@Sean Wasson - can’t wait to see it!

01:25:20
@Pat Maine has work to do, but we are making progress.

01:25:28
We also need to address teacher biases and creating a more inclusive culture in computer science...

01:25:51
@Patricia - Yes!!

01:25:55
@Patricia: Yes!!

01:26:02
agreed!

01:26:03
@Patricia - Absolutely!!

01:26:15
I want to give a big shout out to the CSTA Equity Fellows for sharing how they’re addressing these disparities in their classrooms: csteachers.org/equity

01:26:18
@Alicia totally agree. Integration is *immensely* complicated, and we only have robust early knowledge n the ways that CS can enhance disciplinary learning in math and science, but for other subject areas work in incredibly early when it comes to enhancement (as opposed to just integration).

01:26:25
I want to give a big shout out to the CSTA Equity Fellows for sharing how they’re addressing these disparities in their classrooms: csteachers.org/equity

01:26:51
If we don’t find ways to enhance existing disciplines, teachers in those disciplines won’t have any incentive (rightly) to bring in CS/CT

01:26:59
we are actually working on a national study around this based on a Google CS-ER grant.

01:27:26
@Rafi - Good point!! I appreciate your insight

01:27:54
@Alicia - ty! These are big challenges. : )

@rafi @alicia Goog points!

01:28:24
Good points

01:28:46
Thank you for the shout out Pat!!!

01:28:51
@Rafi : I agree, and this is where physical computing can come in; science teachers tend to be hands-on, tinkering individuals; get them to work with Micro:bit, Arduino, or Raspberry Pi, and CS will ensue

01:28:54
Thank you Pat. Yes we’ll see you on the 29th.

01:29:10
That was a GREAT question!!

01:29:18
Wyoming!

01:29:22
South Carolina requires K-8 to all students.

01:29:23
Indiana

01:29:24
Nevada

01:29:34
for k-8

01:29:34
Nevada has K-12!

01:29:39
required

01:29:51
but not required at 9-12. but we do have standards.

01:30:12
Starting in Fall 2022, all NJ K-8 standards must meet or exceed the CS standards

01:30:13
In WA: When teaching CS - all teachers are required to teach to the standards

01:30:27
Here’s the link to the PRAXIS version of the online course Carol is referring to: https://utakeit.tacc.utexas.edu/foundations-cs-praxis/

01:31:04
Utah is developing the K-12 CS standards; 7-12 are already established, and the K-6 are in production.

01:31:11
For the states that require students to meet the standards, how is that assessed and monitored?

01:31:22
What I love about the WeTeach_CS prep course is that it was developed by John Owen, who is a 20+ year veteran CS teacher

01:31:35
Indiana includes it on their 4th and 6th grade science tests.

01:31:39
weteachcs.org

01:31:44
@Rafi excellent point. re: physical computing

01:31:46
There’s a related question about the required standards, which is what’s accountability system is tied to it. From our research, it is complex and pretty varied. From VA’s school certifications to NV’s middle school grad credit.

01:31:47
Carol- CT will take you up on your offer!

01:31:48
John Owen is awesome!

01:32:39
